Advantages and disadvantages of an e-step

By Indy Teunissen March 03, 2023

More and more people are buying an electric scooter. There are many different types and models of E-steps on the market, but what are the advantages and disadvantages of such an e-step? I explain that to you in this blog.

Advantages of an e-step

Easy to use

An e-step is easy to use. It is lightweight, compact and foldable, making it easy to take with you on public transport, for example. You move faster on an e-step than on foot. You just have to stand on it and then give it gas. The average speed of an e-step is 25 km/h. In addition, you can use the cycle path and you avoid traffic jams and you can go inside.

Relatively cheap

Compared to other electric vehicles such as cars, scooters and bicycles, an e-scooter is relatively cheap (depending on the model) to purchase. An e-step also does not consume expensive fuel and requires little maintenance.

Good for the environment

An e-step is fully electric and has no harmful emissions, so the electric step is not harmful to the environment. An e-step can be charged with green and responsible electricity, which makes it even more environmentally friendly.

Disadvantages of an e-step

Not allowed on the road

Unfortunately, at the moment the e-step is not yet allowed on public roads in the Netherlands, this may change and they will be legalized in the future. There are a few RDW approved E-steps that are allowed on public roads. Use on private property is permitted.

Difficult on a bad road surface

If the road surface is not good, it can be difficult to ride an e-scooter. It will then be difficult to keep it in balance when you stand on it. Your scooter can also get stuck in pits, for example. Some e-step models are not even suitable for unpaved roads, for example.

Stimulates laziness

Despite the light physical effort required to drive an e-scooter, much less effort is of course required than when you set out on foot or by bicycle. In addition, frequent use of an electric scooter can ensure that you create a mobile but also a lazy lifestyle. For short distances it is easier to grab the e-step, which means less and less exercise.

So this popular vehicle has both advantages and disadvantages when using it. An e-scooter creates a mobile and environmentally friendly lifestyle, but it is also important to consider the disadvantages. In particular that it is not yet allowed and difficult to drive on different roads.
